1896 Ford First Car Press Photo and Press Release. Original, likely released during some anniversary, not original to 1896.
Henry Ford's first car. In a one-room brick workshop at 58 Bagley Avenue in Detroit, Henry Ford, a part time mechanic, manufactured a motor car in his spare time in the year 1896. The car wasn't much in the way of looks and its build had some trouble getting it to carry him about. But it would go on occasions and its inventor determined it what proved conclusively that the gas engine was adequate, economical and a satisfactory method of solving one of the problems of rapid transportation. Not an impressive creation, this vehicle was destined to lead the way to an immense Ford empire. Powered by a two-cylinder engine, this first Ford car had a speed of about 10 miles an hour. It had no reverse gear. Guided by a tiller, the car moved on four large bicycle-type wheels. It weighed approximately 500 pounds.
