Exclusive! BL Statement on MG's Future
From Tony Ball, "The long-running success of MG cars came to a temporary halt last October when production of MGBs ceased at Abingdon. Despite continued demand in some parts of the world, economic circumstances including the inflated exchange rate of the pound sterling combined to force the company to make the decision to end production. The famous old factory complex will be sold.
However, BL (British Leyland) has no intention of discarding the MG marque with its rich history. Generations of enthusiasts have come to know the name MG as a synonym for "sports car" and the company has every intention of taking the opportunity to produce a new MG at some future time. It must be said that whatever this car may be--sports car, sports sedan or GT--it will not be produced until we are certain that it is capable of carrying on the tradition of performance, handling and pure driving enjoyment developed by MG cars over more than 50 years."
