ABS 5.3i MSA5T9712A. This 1997 model year Legacy service manual supplement covers the ABS 5.3i system.
ABS 5.3i was introduced late in the 97 model year production. The main difference between ABS 5.3 and ABS 5.3i is the location of the electronic control unit. ABS 5.3 utilized an electronic control unit located in the passenger compartment of the vehicle while the AS 5.3i electronic control unit is incorporated onto the hydraulic control unit. The current 97 select monitor cartridge will allow you to communicate with either ABS system.
Installation of the ABS 5.3i was performed as parts became available. This resulted in a few weeks of production where ABS 5.3 and ABS 5.3i systems were both installed. System identification by VIN during that time of production cannot be performed using the service manual. However, you can identify ABS 5.3i by observing the mounting angle of the hydraulic control unit. It will appear be mounted on its side rather than upright as compared to ABS 5.3 hydraulic control unit.
